CONSENT

Consent - it’s typically not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about your celebrations at Schoolies/Leavers Week. But it is important to understand how consent is given and how to look out for your mates!

Often young people can find themselves confused about how consent works when it is really as simple as YES or NO.

Consent is an agreement between participants to engage in a certain activity. When it comes to engaging in sexual activities, consent should be communicated frequently and freely. A great reminder for young people to remember is that consent comes with an enthusiastic YES. This type of ‘yes’ is not the absence of no, but it is clear, engaged, and excited.

It is important to seek verbal consent before proceeding to avoid any confusion in communication. Remember: consent can also be revoked. A YES in the past does not mean it’s a YES this time.

SO WHAT DOES CONSENT LOOK LIKE?

  • Asking for permission (can I...?)
  • Checking in to confirm consent (is this still okay...?)
  • Being explicit about the decision (YES or NO)

WHAT DOES CONSENT NOT LOOK LIKE?

  • Assuming a ‘YES’ based on how someone is dressed
  • Engaging with that person previously
  • A person being incapacitated due to alcohol and/or drugs
  • Being under the legal age of consent (16 years)
  • Ignoring someone's ‘NO’
